In 1979, NBC was in last place in the network wars and desperate to get back on top with something spectacular. So they bought the spectacularly awful show Supertrain, which–at $6 million–was the most expensive TV show that had ever been made at the time. The premise somehow seemed like gold to NBC executives at the time: a behemoth, nuclear-powered passenger train that could make it from NYC to LA in 36 hours. It was basically the Love Boat but on a train…and with cheesy drama and action sequences instead of cheesy laughs. But this cheese was so intense and so profoundly awful you really should witness it, just so you can have a full understanding of what humanity can do at its very worst.
