Wind energy is fina and wonderful and helpful, but the technology we use to harness it still has a ways to go. The giant blades are expensive and require a lot of maintenance because, well, they’re giant blades. Moving parts add complication. But think about solid-state technology–a solid-state hard drive has no moving parts. It’s more expensive than the traditional spinning disc, but it lasts longer and is much less likely to require maintenance…on account of its lack of moving parts. It’s the same thing with stereos and, it turns out, also the same thing with wind technology. There are a few ways solid-state technology could make wind energy more efficient and easier to adopt–not the least of which are these giant vibrators.
